The Federal Government has approved a reduction in textbook assessment and ranking fees under the National Textbook Ranking System, while directing that publishers who paid the previous charges be refunded.

The revised fee structure reduces the assessment fee from ₦2,000 to ₦1,500 per page, while the ranking fee has been lowered from ₦1 million to ₦750,000 per textbook title. The new rates take immediate effect.

The Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) said the decision followed consultations with stakeholders in the publishing industry, who expressed concerns that the previous charges could increase the cost of producing textbooks and make learning materials less affordable.

The council also confirmed that publishers who had already paid the former fees would receive refunds. According to officials, the adjustment is aimed at easing financial pressure on publishers while maintaining quality standards in the production and assessment of educational materials.
