The President of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, has mourned the passing of veteran basketball coach Lawal Peregrino-Brimah, popularly known as Lancaster, describing his death as a painful loss to Ghanaian, Nigerian and African basketball.
In a condolence message, Abdullahi extended the federation’s sympathies to the deceased’s family, the Ghana Basketball Federation, the government and people of Ghana, and the wider African basketball community.
He described Peregrino-Brimah as an accomplished tactician, mentor and basketball developer whose contributions transcended national boundaries. The late coach worked with Ghana’s national youth team and had associations with Nigerian basketball clubs, including Kano Pillars and Ogun Rocks. His achievements also included being named Ghana’s Basketball Coach of the Year in consecutive years.
Abdullahi noted that Peregrino-Brimah’s impact extended beyond coaching, highlighting his commitment to grassroots development, fundamental skills and the nurturing of young basketball talents. He said the veteran coach’s influence would remain evident in the players and coaches he mentored throughout his career.
While expressing sadness over the loss, the NBBF president said Peregrino-Brimah’s contributions to basketball in Ghana, Nigeria and across Africa would continue to inspire future generations.
He prayed for God to grant the bereaved family the strength to endure the loss and comfort all those affected by the coach’s death, adding that his legacy would endure despite his passing.
