EFCC Violated Court Order by Harassing Yahaya Bello – Lawyer
An All Progressive Congress (APC) chieftain and a lawyer, Jesutega Onokpasa has faulted the style the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) wants to use in bringing Alh. Yahaya Bello, the immediate-past governor of Kogi state, to book.
Onokpasa said the EFCC gave itself away as a lawless agency by refusing to honor a court order restraining it from arresting the ex-Kogi governor.
POLITICS DIGEST had reported that a High Court sitting in Lokoja, Kogi state on Wednesday, restrained the EFCC from infringing on the fundamental human rights of Bello.
Barrister Onokpasa, during a TVC, political program ‘Stand Point’, on Saturday said that Bello has not violated any law by not presenting himself to the EFCC, adding that the latter is even the one acting lawlessly.
He said, “If a person has a court order, that says that you ought not to arrest, arraign or persecute him, you have just one remedy, you can either go to the same court to vacate the order, if the court doesn’t listen, you can then go on appeal. And, as far as I am concerned, every court has jurisdiction when it comes to fundamental human rights.
“There is a procedure, this is a problem with EFCC. We thought the new chairman will transform the sector, if he is not chasing a cross dresser, he is arraigning a barman for spraying money”.
The APC Chieftain maintained that Bello contributed immensely to the success of President Bola Tinubu election and at such, he should be treated with caution.
He further advised the EFCC to carry out a proper investigation and apply the use of intelligence gathering in apprehending suspects.
