Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi has been elected President of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), emerging from Thursday’s elective congress at the International Conference Centre, Abuja, to lead the federation for the 2026–2030 tenure.
Abdullahi secured the federation’s top position in a contest involving prominent figures in Nigerian basketball, including former D’Tigers captain Olumide Oyedeji, former national team player Ejike Ugboaja and basketball administrator Igoche Mark.
His election ushers in a new administration at the NBBF, with the focus now shifting to the direction of the federation, the effectiveness of its governance structures and its capacity to address longstanding challenges confronting Nigerian basketball.
The incoming administration faces key tasks, including strengthening domestic competitions, expanding grassroots development, improving players’ welfare and establishing more sustainable pathways for talent identification and progression. The development of basketball infrastructure and the mobilisation of private-sector investment will also be critical to the sport’s long-term growth.
Abdullahi, who serves as Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria, brings executive leadership experience alongside a longstanding involvement in basketball development. His proposed reform agenda has emphasised institutional strengthening, stakeholder reconciliation, grassroots investment and a more structured framework for nurturing talent across the country.
In his acceptance speech, he pledged to reposition Nigerian basketball by prioritising players’ and officials’ welfare, training and adequate preparation, strengthening the league and the federation, uniting stakeholders, deepening grassroots engagement and expanding international participation.
Describing his emergence as a new dawn for Nigerian basketball — “From Potential to Podium” — Dr Abdullahi called on fellow candidates and stakeholders to unite behind his leadership in transforming the game.
He succeeds Engr. Ahmadu Musa Kida, whose tenure as NBBF president concludes with the emergence of a new leadership team. The transition places renewed attention on the federation’s institutional continuity, accountability and capacity to translate Nigeria’s considerable basketball talent into sustained domestic and international progress.
Abdullahi’s emergence marks a significant transition in the leadership of Nigerian basketball, with his administration expected to chart a clear direction for the sport’s development, strengthen institutional structures and reposition the federation to meet the demands of the domestic and international game.
