Tesla CEO Elon Musk has unveiled a futuristic version of the company’s Roadster sports car, featuring rocket-style thrusters that enable it to perform airborne manoeuvres.
The vehicle was demonstrated on Thursday at a SpaceX test facility in Texas, where it launched off a ramp, performed a mid-air flip and landed on its wheels.
Musk described the innovation as proof that flying cars could become a reality, attributing the technology to collaboration between Tesla and SpaceX.
The vehicle uses ultra-high-pressure air tanks to generate thrust, allowing it to lift off the ground during demonstrations.
Musk said production could begin in 2028, although he acknowledged that the project’s success was not guaranteed.
The unveiling marks another milestone in Tesla’s long-running development of its next-generation Roadster, which was first announced in 2017 but has faced repeated production delays.
Despite the impressive demonstration, questions remain about the vehicle’s commercial viability, safety and regulatory approval for road use.
