Nigeria’s premier tertiary institution, University of Ibadan (UI) has confirmed Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki graduated from the institution.

This follows the doubt expressed by the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole, on Tuesday, over the authenticity of the first -degree certificate presented by the governor.

Oshiomhole, during the inauguration of the APC’s screening and appeal committees for its members contesting the governorship primary in Edo, said “someone should approach the UI and end this matter once and for all.

“If the certificate Obaseki parades is that of the UI, find out how did he pass senate screening of those days? I’m aware that in those days when this man never dreamt of becoming a governor, every student, no matter your status or your family name, must pass screening.”

However the institution’s registrar, Olubunmi Faluyi, in a press statement on Wednesday, confirmed the certificate of Obaseki, stating that records of his admission and graduation are intact in the archives of the University.

“Mr Godwin Nogheghase Obaseki, the Governor of Edo State graduated from the University of Ibadan where he studied Classics,” said UI registrar.

“Obaseki gained admission to the University in 1976 and graduated in 1979 with a Second Class Honours, Lower Division.

“Records of his Admission and Graduation are intact in the archives of the University.”

Shortly after the confirmation, Obaseki retweeted the story on the confirmation published by a medium with the comment, “posterity will always vindicate the just.”

MERIDIAN SPY reported Friday, some chieftains of the All progressive Congress (APC) filed a suit against the governor over allegations of certificate forgery.

In the suit filed before a Federal High Court in Abuja, the APC chieftains; Edobor Williams, Ugbesia Abudu Godwin and Amedu Dauda Anakhu accused the governor of forging his first degree certificate, Bachelor of Art in Classical studies, which he obtained from the University of Ibadan (UI).

Counsel to Obaseki, Alex Ejesieme, described the suit as frivolous and irrelevant, adding that the defence team is preparing its response to challenge the plaintiffs in court next week (this week).
