Some chieftains of the All progressive Congress (APC) have filed a suit against Edo State governor, Godwin Obaseki over allegations of certificate forgery.

In the suit filed before a Federal High Court in Abuja, the APC chieftains; Edobor Williams, Ugbesia Abudu Godwin and Amedu Dauda Anakhu accused the governor of forging his first degree certificate, Bachelor of Art in Classical studies, which he obtained from the University of Ibadan (UI).

The plaintiffs said the offence is in violation of the provisions of section 182(1)(i) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended), which therefore makes Obaseki “not qualified to run or seek the office of the governor of Edo state” in the forthcoming 2020 governorship election.

Counsel to Obaseki, Alex Ejesieme, in an interview with Daily Trust, described the suit as frivolous and irrelevant, adding that the defence team is preparing its response to challenge the plaintiffs in court next week.

This is coming just as the governor is gearing up for the upcoming APC primaries to win the party’s ticket for the September governorship election in the state.

The primary election, which is scheduled to hold on Monday, June 22, will see him (Obaseki) go head to head against his 2016 governorship opponent, Osagie Ize-Iyamu who is believed to have the support of the party’s national chairman, Adams Oshiomhole.
