Amid claims the Igbos of South-East region are allegedly being marginalised by the current administration and is responsible for the persisting agitation for Biafra, some chieftains of the All Progressive Congress (APC) from the region have dismissed the notion as untrue.

While making clear that the people of the region were currently more united than ever, the party chieftains maintained that there was nothing like marginalisation of the Igbo people, adding that it remained a mere speculation and figment of the imagination of those who are not well informed.

The key APC leaders from the South East region stated this on Saturday, at a meeting held in Owerri, Imo State capital where they paid a solidarity visit to the state Governor, Sen. Hope Uzodinma.

The meeting had in attendance a former President of the Senate, Chief Ken Nnamani, Minister of Science and Technology, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu, Minister of Labour and Productivity, Dr Chris Ngige, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Geoffrey Onyema, Minister of State, Mines and Steel Development, Dr Uche Ogah, Minister of State, Education, Dr Emeka Nwajiuba, and Sir Frank Ibezim.

Nnamani, who is currently representing the South-East in the newly constituted National Caretaker Committee of the APC, told newsmen, shortly after the meeting held behind closed doors, that the delegation did not only come to wish Governor Uzodinma, who is the only APC governor in the South-East, well, but to also let him know they were impressed with what they have seen on the ground.

He said they believe “strongly that there is a lot of hope in the person Hope as the Governor of Imo State.

On his part, the Governor said the APC government in Imo State remained the gateway to integrating Igbos into the national political and socio-economic grid as well as the policy framework of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Commenting on the possibility of having an Igbo president in 2023, Sen. Uzodinma said what should bother the Igbo is “a Nigerian President of Igbo extraction and not Igbo President of Nigeria”.

He added, “The South-East is part of Nigeria, South-East leaders exhibit all qualities and capabilities for good governance and as such believe that the APC as the ruling party in Nigeria will make the right decision at the appropriate time.”

Ngige also told journalist that the South-East ministers at the Federal Executive Council (FEC) has been giving the region effective representation, “getting what is the due share for the South-East”.

He further listed projects in the region both completed and ongoing as well as other benefits the South-East has been enjoying under the APC-led federal government to include: the credit empowerment Scheme, the N-power project, Home School Feeding programme, East Coast Rail project running from Lagos-Benin-Onitsha-Nnewi to Owerri
