Police in Ebonyi State have commenced an investigation into the death of an 80-year-old man, Onwe Ubochi, in Osege village, Umuogodo Oshia Ngbo community, Ohaukwu Local Government Area.
Ubochi reportedly left his residence on Monday, August 17, 2026, but did not return home.
His body was discovered the following day along a bush path within the community and was subsequently evacuated by police operatives to the Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, where he was confirmed dead and deposited in the morgue.
According to reports, Ubochi had earlier led a group of elders in a prayer session and endorsement of All Progressives Grand Alliance candidates before he was allegedly attacked while returning home.
The circumstances surrounding his death remain under investigation, and the police have not identified those responsible.
The Ebonyi State Police Command, through its spokesperson, SP Joshua Ukandu, said a comprehensive investigation had commenced to establish what happened and identify those responsible.
The command also appealed to members of the public with useful information about the incident to come forward, assuring residents that every necessary step would be taken to uncover the circumstances surrounding the death.
The APGA House of Representatives candidate for Ebonyi/Ohaukwu Federal Constituency, Tochukwu Ogalagu, condemned the killing and called for those responsible to be brought to justice.
Ogalagu alleged that Ubochi had been waylaid while returning home from the political consultation and urged APGA supporters to remain calm as the police investigate the incident.
He also alleged that the killing was connected to political threats, but those claims have not been established by the police.
The police investigation is expected to determine the circumstances of Ubochi’s death and whether there was any political motive behind the incident.
