The National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has approved a waiver of screening requirements for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the party’s forthcoming primary elections.
The decision was reached at the NWC’s 188th meeting held on Wednesday in Abuja, where the committee resolved to deem the president as duly screened in line with the party’s constitution, clearing him to participate in the primaries.
According to a statement issued by the APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, the waiver was granted pursuant to Article 13.4 (xiii) and (xiv) of the party’s constitution, which empowers the NWC to organise and supervise primaries and, under special circumstances, grant waivers in the party’s best interest.
The committee cited what it described as overwhelming endorsements for Tinubu from key stakeholders within the party, including the Progressive Governors Forum, members of the National Assembly, and other party organs.
It also referenced the vote of confidence passed on the president at the APC National Summit held on May 22, 2025, as well as similar affirmations at other statutory meetings of the party.
The NWC further noted that Tinubu, as the incumbent president and leader of the party, had already undergone screening and clearance prior to the APC’s 2022 presidential primaries, making any fresh screening exercise unnecessary.
The statement added that requiring the president to appear again before a screening committee would be “redundant and unnecessary” under the present circumstances.
The development effectively clears Tinubu for participation in the APC’s upcoming presidential primary, as the ruling party intensifies preparations for the 2027 general elections.
