The All Progressives Congress (APC) has said the inability of opposition political parties to meet the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) deadline for the submission of candidates for the 2027 general elections reflects their lack of preparedness to govern.
In a statement issued on Sunday by its National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, the ruling party said it successfully met INEC’s July 11 deadline for uploading the names of its presidential, vice-presidential, Senate and House of Representatives candidates on the commission’s Candidate Nomination Portal.
According to the APC, INEC’s decision to extend the submission deadline to July 14 followed requests from opposition parties that failed to complete their nomination processes before the deadline.
The party noted that although INEC acted within its statutory powers and administrative discretion in granting the extension, the development highlighted what it described as the opposition’s inability to effectively manage its internal affairs despite having fewer candidates to process than the APC.
“The extension was necessitated by the stark failure of opposition parties to manage their internal processes to comply with INEC’s submission deadline,” the statement said.
The APC argued that political parties unable to conclude their nomination processes on schedule could not be trusted by Nigerians to effectively govern the country or its subnational governments.
The ruling party also accused opposition parties of hypocrisy, recalling what it described as their repeated allegations that the APC influences INEC’s decisions.
According to the APC, the same parties that had accused it of controlling the electoral commission sought and received an extension from INEC after failing to meet the deadline.
“It is starkly ironical that the same opposition parties have repeatedly peddled false, malicious and unfounded tales that the APC controls and dictates INEC’s decisions. Yet, as they failed to meet the submission deadline, they turned to the same INEC for respite and were granted an extension,” the statement added.
The APC maintained that its successful completion of the candidate nomination process demonstrated the party’s organisational strength, discipline and commitment to due process.
As preparations for the 2027 general elections progress, the party called on its leaders, stakeholders and supporters to intensify grassroots mobilisation, strengthen party structures and promote the achievements of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
It also urged members to prepare for what it described as a vigorous, issue-based campaign aimed at securing another electoral mandate in the 2027 general elections.
