Two years after their brutal killing, troops of the Nigerian Army have recovered suspected remains of two soldiers abducted and murdered by members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), in Imo State.
This came during a breakthrough operation targeting the group’s hideouts in the South-East.
The development followed a clearance operation conducted on April 24, 2026, by troops of the 82 Division, in collaboration with other security agencies, along the Ubaha Orsu axis of Orsu Local Government Area.
A statement by the Nigerian Army said the mission was part of sustained efforts to dismantle IPOB/ESN strongholds in the region and to locate the remains of Master Warrant Officer Linus Musa Audu and Private Gloria Mathew, who were abducted and murdered in May 2022 while travelling for their traditional wedding.
According to the statement, troops acting on credible intelligence advanced on a suspected IPOB/ESN hideout but came under heavy attack from armed fighters.
Despite the ambush, the troops reportedly fought back with superior firepower, repelling multiple attacks and forcing the assailants to retreat.
“The encounter further exposed the desperation and criminal nature of the group, which continues to target innocent citizens and security personnel alike,” the Army said.
Following the successful clearance of the camp, troops conducted a detailed search of the area, leading to the discovery of shallow graves believed to contain the remains of the slain personnel.
The Army said the graves were carefully excavated and the suspected remains recovered for further examination.
“The recovered remains have since been secured for detailed forensic analysis, including DNA testing, to conclusively establish their identities,” the statement added.
It noted that efforts were ongoing to liaise with the families of the deceased soldiers to ensure proper identification and facilitate dignified burial arrangements.
The Army described the discovery as a significant step towards justice for the fallen personnel and a reflection of its commitment to honouring those who paid the ultimate price in service to the nation.
It also said the operation highlights the continued degradation of IPOB/ESN networks across the South-East and exposes what it described as the group’s “heinous atrocities and disregard for human life.”
The Army reassured residents of its resolve to sustain operations until all criminal elements are neutralised and lasting peace restored in the region.
It urged members of the public to remain vigilant and continue to support security agencies with timely and credible information.
