Stop Dividing the North with Falsehoods – FG tells Kwankwaso
The Minister of Works, Sen. Nweze David Umahi, has sharply rebuked Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso’s claim that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s road projects favour the South over the North.
Umahi dismissed the statement as “absolutely false, misleading, and self-serving”, accusing Kwankwaso of intentionally sowing division among North Nigerians .
According to the statement released by the Ministry, Kwankwaso’s assertion is part of a political strategy aimed at presenting himself as a superior northern voice, using questionable allegations to sway public opinion and undermine unity.
Umahi emphasized that genuine development comes through transparency and national unity—not political grandstanding.
The Ministry also presented a breakdown of ongoing federal highway projects showing that:
The Sokoto–Badagry Superhighway, spanning over 1,068 km, has 756 km under construction in northern states—versus 350 km in southern regions.
On the Abuja–Kaduna–Kano route, 350 km is currently under reconstruction on concrete pavement, involving a ₦764 billion contract with 30% already executed.
Additional flagship projects such as the Kano–Maiduguri dualisation, Sokoto–Zaria corridor, and Borno road upgrades are ongoing under President Tinubu’s “legacy” road programme, reflecting the north’s share of over 52% of total national highway development .
While acknowledging infrastructure work in the South—such as the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway and ongoing dualisation of East–West corridors—the Ministry affirmed that equitable distribution is central to the Renewed Hope Agenda.
“Senator Kwankwaso must recognize that the northern region is not being short-changed. In fact, many of these projects were inherited commitments from the previous administration that we have sustained and accelerated,” Umahi stated.
He warned that divisive rhetoric benefits no one and urged political leaders to prioritize unity over misinformation .
Sen. Umahi reaffirmed his willingness to engage in public debate on the issue to clear misconceptions and set the record straight.
He concluded with a strong appeal: Nigerians—and especially northerners—should reject political falsehoods and stand by leaders who deliver equitable infrastructure across all regions.
