Ebonyi State Government has shut down its offices after coronavirus test results of some members of its cabinet returned positive.

This was confirmed in a statement by the state Commissioner for Information and State Orientation, Orji Uchenna Orji, but the identity of the cabinet members remained undisclosed.

The state governor, David Umahi, having described the situation as ‘disturbing’, ordered the immediate decontamination of all offices with a specific directive to workers in the state Ministry of Finance and Budget to immediately go for a COVID19 test within seven days, according to the statement by Orji.

The statement also indicated that all government offices will be shut for decontamination from today, Thursday, June 4 to Wednesday, June 10.

“All civil servants shall work from their respective homes within this period but shall leave their phones open to respond to official imperatives. All Exco members and Government officials especially of the Ministries of Finance and Budget are advised to undergo COVID-19 test within this seven days period,” the statement further reads.

“The Governor further advises that during this period of close down of Government offices, all workers especially from the two Ministries aforementioned should go into self isolation. All site operations shall however remain open, but must be in strict observance of COVID-19 protocol.”

According to data released by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), the state recorded 23, out of the 348 new COVID-19 cases announced on Wednesday night and now has 63 in total, out of the 11,166 infections confirmed in the country.
