The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, has warned motorists against using social media while driving, cautioning that distractions from mobile phones can lead to road crashes and loss of lives.
Mohammed stressed the need for drivers to remain focused on the road, noting that checking notifications, replying to messages and browsing social media platforms could compromise their concentration and reaction time.
He said even a momentary diversion of attention could prevent motorists from responding appropriately to sudden hazards, thereby increasing the risk of accidents.
The FRSC boss urged motorists to prioritise safety by keeping their phones away while driving and avoiding activities that could distract them from traffic conditions.
He also called on road users to embrace responsible driving habits and comply with traffic regulations to reduce preventable crashes on Nigerian roads.
Mohammed reiterated the corps’ commitment to promoting road safety awareness and protecting lives through public education, enforcement of traffic laws and sustained engagement with motorists.
He urged drivers to exercise discipline behind the wheel, stressing that responsible use of technology includes knowing when to put mobile devices aside, particularly when operating a vehicle.
The warning comes amid concerns over the dangers of distracted driving, with the FRSC continuing to advocate greater caution and responsibility among motorists.
The corps urged drivers to make road safety a priority by remaining attentive behind the wheel and avoiding behaviours that could endanger themselves and other road users.
