Lionel Messi ended his illustrious international career on a high as Argentina defeated Benin 3-0 in a friendly at the Monumental Stadium in Buenos Aires.
Playing his 208th and final match for Argentina, the 39-year-old captain delivered a fitting farewell, scoring once and providing two assists in front of more than 85,000 emotional fans.
Nicolas Otamendi opened the scoring shortly after half-time before Messi set up Nico Paz for Argentina’s second. The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner then converted a penalty in the 71st minute to seal the victory and score his 126th international goal.
Messi leaves the national team as Argentina’s most-capped player and all-time leading scorer, with a World Cup title and two Copa America triumphs to his name.
