Leaders of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are set to meet in Cardiff on Monday, September 14, 2026, in a renewed effort to strengthen cooperation and press for greater constitutional powers for their respective nations within the United Kingdom.

Scottish First Minister John Swinney, Welsh First Minister Rhun ap Iowerth and Northern Ireland First Minister Michelle O’Neill are expected to sign a joint declaration backing greater self-determination, including the possibility of future votes on independence or Irish reunification.

Mary Lou McDonald, president of Sinn Féin and opposition leader in the Republic of Ireland, is also expected to attend the meeting at the St David’s Hotel in Cardiff Bay.

The summit is expected to address cooperation in key areas including the economy, energy and relations with Europe, alongside wider discussions on constitutional reform and the future structure of the United Kingdom.

The gathering comes amid renewed debate over the constitutional future of the UK and carries added significance as Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are currently led by political parties advocating substantial changes to the existing constitutional arrangement.

While the meeting does not amount to a formal move to dissolve the United Kingdom, the joint initiative signals growing political pressure for greater autonomy and for the people of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland to have a greater say in determining their constitutional futures.
