Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has urged President Bola Tinubu to either resign or put any plans for a second term on hold if his administration cannot effectively tackle Nigeria’s worsening insecurity.
Obi said the protection of lives and property remains the primary responsibility of any government, stressing that the continued wave of killings, kidnappings and violent attacks across the country reflects a failure in governance.
The former Anambra State governor maintained that rather than focusing on the 2027 general election, President Tinubu should concentrate on restoring security and rebuilding public confidence in his administration.
Obi also recalled that before becoming president, Tinubu had criticised former President Goodluck Jonathan over insecurity, particularly following the abduction of the Chibok schoolgirls in 2014. He argued that leaders should be held to the same standards they demanded of previous administrations.
According to Obi, any government unable to guarantee the safety of its citizens should prioritise addressing the security crisis before seeking another electoral mandate.
His remarks come amid growing public concern over persistent banditry, terrorism and kidnapping in several parts of the country, with political discussions ahead of the 2027ik general elections already gaining momentum.
