Why the NBBF Must Open the Door to Proven Young Leadership, By Abdulwahab Yakubu 

The future of Nigerian basketball should not be determined by how long a person has occupied a seat, but by what that person has demonstrably achieved, the quality of his vision and his capacity to build institutions that outlive him.

That is why the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) should seriously consider creating a pathway for competent younger Nigerians in their 30s and 40s with proven leadership records to assume the federation’s highest office. This is not an argument for youth for its own sake. It is an argument for merit, renewal, innovation and generational transition.

International basketball provides compelling evidence with compelling examples. In 2015, Andrei Kirilenko became president of the Russian Basketball Federation at 34, only two months after ending an illustrious playing career. He inherited a federation suspended by FIBA over institutional and legal problems. His election demonstrated that a younger basketball insider could be entrusted with institutional reform at a critical moment.

Two years later, Yao Ming became chairman of the Chinese Basketball Association at 36. His appointment represented a significant shift toward professionalisation, commercialisation, talent development and modern sports management. Yao brought international networks, commercial credibility and first-hand knowledge of elite basketball into governance.

Turkey made a similar choice. Hedo Türkoğlu was 37 when elected president of the Turkish Basketball Federation in 2016. He subsequently championed stronger cooperation with clubs and improved player development.

Spain offers another powerful example. Jorge Garbajosa was 38 when elected president of the Spanish Basketball Federation in July 2016. During his presidency, Spain won the 2019 FIBA World Cup, while Spanish basketball continued its remarkable international success. Garbajosa subsequently became President of FIBA Europe, demonstrating how effective national leadership can provide a pathway to continental leadership.

Then there is Pero Antić, elected president of the Basketball Federation of North Macedonia at 36 in 2019. He brought elite playing experience, international relationships and a commitment to developing the next generation into federation leadership.

These examples demolish the false dichotomy between youth and experience. The real issue is how experience is deployed. Nigeria does not need to discard its basketball veterans. Quite the opposite. A young, competent executive leadership backed by respected veterans and experienced stakeholders could be the transformative shift the NBBF needs. Veterans possess institutional memory, relationships, historical knowledge and invaluable lessons from decades of involvement in the game. Those assets should be preserved and deliberately incorporated into the federation’s governance architecture.

But perhaps the most productive role for many of these veterans is advisory, mentoring and strategic guidance, rather than perpetual competition for elective executive positions. Imagine an NBBF in which younger leaders drive the executive agenda while a properly constituted Council of Elders, Advisory Council or Technical and Strategic Advisory Board comprising former administrators, players, coaches, referees, financiers and other respected basketball stakeholders provides institutional memory, independent counsel and continuity.

That would not diminish the veterans. It would elevate their experience from political competition to institutional capital. Nigeria’s basketball administration must move beyond the culture of asking, “How long have you been around?” and begin asking, “What have you built, and what can you build next?”

The NBBF presides over enormous human capital, a globally respected women’s programme, a deep pool of young players and a potentially vast commercial market. What is required is leadership capable of converting these assets into stronger domestic leagues, sustainable grassroots development, modern facilities, private-sector investment, data-driven talent identification, professional administration and globally competitive national teams.

The experiences of Russia, China, Turkey, Spain and North Macedonia show that accomplished leaders in their 30s and 40s can govern sophisticated basketball institutions. Nigeria should not only admire these examples. It should embrace the principle behind them.

The future of the NBBF should therefore belong neither exclusively to the old nor automatically to the young. It should belong to competence with the energy of a new generation and the wisdom of those who built the foundation. Let the young lead. Let the veterans guide. Let competence decide. And let Nigerian basketball finally become bigger than the politics of who occupies the chair.
