The Presidency has criticised former Vice President Atiku Abubakar for failing to publicly react to the successful rescue of pupils and teachers abducted in Oyo State, while commending Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi for acknowledging the efforts of security agencies.
Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, in a statement on Friday, described Atiku’s silence as disappointing, arguing that national security achievements should transcend political differences.
Onanuga praised Obi for publicly welcoming the rescue of the victims and recognising the role played by security operatives in securing their freedom.
The rescued victims were among 39 pupils and seven teachers kidnapped by armed assailants during attacks on schools in Orire Local Government Area of Oyo State in May. The Federal Government said all those held captive had been freed through coordinated security operations without yielding to the kidnappers’ demands.
The Presidency maintained that the operation reflected the government’s resolve to tackle insecurity and urged political leaders to support security successes irrespective of partisan interests.
However, the rescue came after a tragic ordeal in which two teachers lost their lives during the period of captivity.
