Argentina football icon Lionel Messi is set to receive an honorary doctorate from the University of Buenos Aires (UBA) in recognition of his illustrious career and contribution to representing the country.
The university’s Higher Council unanimously approved the conferment of its highest honorary distinction on Messi, with the award scheduled to be presented on Tuesday, October 6, ahead of his farewell appearance for the Argentine national team at the Monumental Stadium.
According to the university, Messi’s career represents excellence, perseverance, humility and ethical conduct, while highlighting his long-standing commitment to representing Argentina.
The UBA also cited his role in Argentina’s major international triumphs, including the 2021 Copa América, 2022 Finalissima, 2022 FIFA World Cup and 2024 Copa América.
The institution said the honour goes beyond Messi’s achievements and statistics on the football pitch, recognising his broader significance as a representative of Argentine culture and national identity.
UBA Rector, Ricardo Gelpi, said the university sought to recognise Messi not only for his sporting accomplishments but also for the values and example associated with his career.
The honorary doctorate will be conferred shortly before Messi’s scheduled farewell match for Argentina against Benin at the Monumental Stadium on October 6.
