Madagascar has reported its first death of a coronavirus patient in the country.

The Indian Ocean island country recorded no death since its index COVID-19 case was confirmed nearly two months ago.

With the new death announced on Sunday, Madagascar now has a total of 304 cases, 114 recoverie and one death only, according to Worldometer.

Meridian had reported days ago, the country’s President, Andry Rajoelina touted its discovery of a herbal remedy for the virus, called COVID-19 Organics (CVO), produced from Artemisia, a plant with proven efficacy against malaria, and other indigenous herbs.

55 COVID-19 patients in Madagascar treated with the herbal drug recovered from the virus disease but despite the claim of the efficacy of the drug, a patient has now died of the disease.

The World Health Organization (WHO) on Thursday said that it was in touch with the country over its herbal drink, after President Rajoelina slammed the global health body for not endorsing the CVO.
