Presidential candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Seyi Makinde, has selected former Director-General of the State Security Service (SSS), Lawal Daura, as his running mate for the 2027 presidential election.

Daura, who led the SSS from 2015 to 2018, was unveiled as Makinde’s vice-presidential candidate during the party’s national convention held at Rilwan Adamu Square in Bauchi on Thursday.

The announcement was contained in a statement issued by the Oyo State Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, who said Makinde intentionally chose the former intelligence chief because of the country’s growing security concerns.

“His Presidential running mate is Alh. Lawal Musa Daura, the former Director-General of the State Security Service (SSS) between 2015 and 2018, whom he said was deliberately chosen to solve the security situation of the country,” the statement read.

Daura served as SSS director-general under former President Muhammadu Buhari before he was removed from office in 2018.

Makinde was formally elected as the APM presidential candidate at the convention and used the occasion to promise collaboration with politicians who share his vision for national development.

“The APM Presidential candidate said that he will work actively with like-minded politicians to ensure a better Nigeria come 2027,” the statement added.

The Oyo State governor also said he was ready to tackle poverty and improve the living conditions of millions of Nigerians, arguing that recent economic difficulties had been worsened by ineffective policies.

“Gov. Makinde said he’s well prepared to lift the millions of Nigerians out of the poverty level, which has ravaged the land even more in the past three years as a result of poorly implemented policies,” Oyelade stated.

Makinde further explained that Bauchi was chosen for the convention because of its historical importance as the home state of Nigeria’s first Prime Minister, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa.
