Fireworks Ban: Delta Police Warn Residents, Impound Stock Worth Millions

The Delta State Police Command has warned residents against the use, sale, and display of fireworks during the festive season, insisting that the ban on pyrotechnics remains fully in force across the state.

Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, said the enforcement is part of measures to prevent crimes during Christmas and New Year celebrations, noting that criminals often exploit fireworks to cause panic and carry out attacks under the guise of festivities.

According to a statement issued by the Command’s spokesperson, SP Edafe Bright, in Asaba on Thursday, the police have already recovered fireworks worth millions of naira from targeted enforcement operations ahead of the Yuletide season.

Abaniwonda directed the command’s DCP Operations, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and Tactical Units to ensure strict compliance across all jurisdictions.

Parents and guardians were urged to warn their children and wards against the use of fireworks and firecrackers popularly known as “knockout”, “banger”, and other pyrotechnics.

“Anyone found selling, distributing, or using fireworks will be arrested and prosecuted, while their goods will be confiscated,” the CP warned.

Retailers have equally been advised to withdraw from the sale of pyrotechnics or risk arrest.

While appreciating the cooperation of Delta residents, the Command encouraged the public to report sightings or use of fireworks to the nearest police station or through the Command’s control room numbers:

The command wished residents a peaceful Christmas celebration and a prosperous New Year in advance.
