2027: Wike Hints at PDP Endorsing Tinubu for Second Term

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has said the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) may not be in good position to present a candidate to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 election.

He however said during his monthly media chat on Friday that the party will take part in the 2027 general elections and contest for all positions across the country, from governorship to state House of Assembly and National Assembly.

While affirming that the PDP has been revived and is in good position, he expressed doubt that it can put together a presidential candidate that will make an impact in the race.

He made it clear that the PDP will appear on the ballot and still hopes to perform well in some areas of the country.

Wike explained that even though the party has not produced a president since 2015, it has remained active and continues to operate across different levels of government.

He said the main concern should be how to keep the party strong and active rather than worrying only about winning the presidency.

He advised party members to focus more on building strength at the state and local levels.

According to him, political success does not depend only on the presidential seat, as control at lower levels also plays a key role in staying relevant.

The former governor of Rivers State also warned against rushing to present a presidential candidate without proper planning.

He said: “The PDP will be on the ballot in 2027. We have a lot of work to do, but the party will make an impact in some areas. From 2015 till now, we have not produced a president, but the party is still standing. The focus should be on keeping the party active and relevant. Not everything is about the presidency, as parties must also compete strongly at the state level.

“You cannot rush to present a presidential candidate without proper preparation because elections require mental and emotional readiness. Winning the presidency without control at lower levels will weaken the party.”

He noted that contesting elections requires both mental readiness and strong preparation, adding that parties must build support from the grassroots to remain competitive.

He further stated that winning at the top without strong control in other areas can weaken a party’s influence and reduce its chances of long-term success.

Wike has repeatedly said he will be working for the reelection of President Tinubu in 2027
