2027: No Plan to Defect to NDC- Atiku
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) and associates of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar have refuted reports suggesting ongoing negotiations to defect to the National Democratic Congress (NDC), amid speculation of possible political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections.
The denials come at a time when the ADC is grappling with internal disagreements over leadership and strategy, particularly concerning how to navigate a broad opposition coalition in the lead-up to the next general polls.
Reacting to the claims, Atiku’s media aide, Paul Ibe, dismissed the reports, stating that no such discussions were taking place involving the former vice president or ex-Osun State governor Rauf Aregbesola.
“If there were any such talks, I would certainly be aware. To the best of my knowledge, nothing like that is happening,” Ibe said.
Party officials within the ADC also rejected the reports, insisting there had been no engagement linking key members of the party with the NDC. They described the claims as inaccurate and misleading.
ADC National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, dismissed the reports outright, labeling them “completely baseless.”
Speculation about possible defections intensified following the recent move by former presidential candidates Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso to the NDC, which has since sparked discussions about a potential new opposition bloc.
However, insiders suggest that while political actors are exploring alliances ahead of 2027, any ongoing engagements are more likely centered on coalition-building rather than outright party defections.
