Edward Okocha, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has declared that Senator Orji Uzor Kalu is well-positioned to contest for the Senate presidency in 2027, urging Ude Oko Chukwu, former deputy governor of Abia State, to drop his senatorial ambition.
Chukwu, who served as deputy governor from 2015 to 2023, recently dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the Labour Party (LP) with his supporters. His move has fueled speculations that he plans to contest the Abia North senatorial seat.
In a statement on Sunday, Okocha cautioned Chukwu against challenging Kalu, the current senator representing Abia North, describing him as a “formidable force” and “top contender” for the Senate presidency.
“Distinguished Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has been doing an outstanding job in the Senate, bringing meaningful projects and empowerment to our zone,” Okocha said.
He maintained that Kalu’s “legislative experience and seniority” had already placed Abia North in a vantage position at the National Assembly, adding that his aspiration for the Senate presidency could unlock greater opportunities for the region.
“As we look towards 2027, Abia North stands to benefit more by rallying round Senator Orji Uzor Kalu for re-election, thereby positioning him for greater responsibilities in the Senate,” he added.
Okocha stressed that Kalu’s leadership would be a “game-changer” for the people of Abia North and called on stakeholders to unite behind him.
