US Panel Urges Nigeria to Repeal Sharia, Blasphemy Laws
A United States congressional panel has called for the repeal of Nigeria’s Sharia and Blasphemy laws, citing the measures as critical to addressing the persecution of Christians and escalating insecurity in the country.
Earlier, Congressman Riley M. Moore, in collaboration with members of the House Committees on Appropriations and Foreign Affairs, submitted a report to the White House outlining concrete steps to curb religious persecution and combat extremist violence in Nigeria.
The report follows President Donald Trump’s designation of Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC) on October 31, 2025. President Trump tasked Congressman Moore and House Appropriations Committee Chairman Tom Cole to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the challenges facing Christian communities and the broader security landscape in Nigeria.
The findings stem from months of work, including a bipartisan congressional fact-finding mission to Nigeria, expert hearings, consultations with religious leaders, meetings with internally displaced persons, and engagements with senior Nigerian government officials.
Key recommendations of the report include:
1. Establishing a bilateral U.S.–Nigeria security agreement to protect vulnerable Christian communities and dismantle jihadist networks.
2. Withholding certain U.S. funds until the Nigerian government takes meaningful steps to stop violence against Christians.
3. Imposing sanctions and visa restrictions on individuals and groups complicit in religious persecution.
4. Providing technical assistance to address violence perpetrated by armed Fulani militias.
5. Demanding the repeal of Sharia and Blasphemy laws.
6. Collaborating with international partners, including France, Hungary, and the United Kingdom, to address the crisis.
Speaking after the White House briefing, Congressman Moore said:
“Following today’s meeting, I am grateful to President Trump for redesignating Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern and for the Administration’s commitment to protecting Christians and addressing broader security challenges. Since being tasked with this investigation, we have worked diligently to produce a report that outlines accountability measures, strategies to counter radical Islamic terrorism, and steps for cooperation with the Nigerian government to bring security to all Nigerians.
“Christians in Nigeria have suffered in silence for too long. The world is now watching, and I urge the Nigerian government to seize this opportunity to strengthen its partnership with the United States. Together, we can confront these security challenges and end the violence.”
The report is expected to serve as a blueprint for U.S.–Nigeria cooperation on religious freedom and security, signaling increased international attention on the protection of vulnerable communities in Nigeria.
