Ali Ndume, Senator representing Borno South senatorial district, has asked his lawyers to begin the process for him to withdraw as the surety of Abdulrasheed Maina, former chairman of the Pension Reform Task Team (PRTT).

Recall Maina who is facing a 12-count money laundering charge, had jumped bail since September 29 and refused to appear for continuation of his trial. This led to the remand of Ndume who stood for the Ex-Pension boss as surety in Kuje Correctional Centre for seven days following an order by trial Justice Okon Abang.

Maina was however, arrested by a collaboration of the Nigerian police and INTERPOL in Niger Republic and subsequently extradited to Nigeria on Thursday.

When returned to the Federal High Court in Abuja, on Friday for resumed trial by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the ex-pension boss was ordered to be remanded in prison custody until end of his trial.

Speaking with journalists in Abuja on Friday, Ndume commended the police for arresting Maina.

He said he decided to withdraw as Maina’s surety because he is not trustworthy.

“I commend the Nigeria Police Force for executing the bench warrant issued on Maina by the federal high court in Abuja. This has shown that the NPF is not a write-off. They are professionals under the able leadership of the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu,” the senator said.

“With the successful arrest, extradition and subsequent remand of Maina at the Kuje Correctional Centre, I will proceed to direct my legal team to begin the process of withdrawing my suretyship for Maina with immediate effect because his action has shown that he is not trustworthy.”
