The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) has dismissed reports claiming that the Federal Government will introduce a new vehicle tax effective July 1, 2026.

A viral infographic had alleged that a green tax surcharge of 2–4% would be imposed on vehicles with large engine capacities, sparking public outrage.

The report suggested that cars with engines between 2,000cc and 3,999cc would face a 2% levy, while those above 4,000cc would be charged 4%. Vehicles below 2,000cc, electric cars, mass transit buses, and locally manufactured vehicles were said to be exempt.

In a statement, NRS spokesperson Dare Adekanmbi described the claims as “false and misleading,” stressing that no new tax has been introduced.

“The attention of the Nigeria Revenue Service has been drawn to a viral infographic message claiming that the Federal Government has introduced a fresh vehicle tax effective from July 1, 2026.

The NRS wishes to state categorically that the information did not emanate from the Service or any government agency,” the statement read.

Adekanmbi warned that the message was deliberately designed to mislead the public, noting that it even carried the government’s logo to appear authentic.

He urged Nigerians to disregard the fabricated report and rely only on verified official channels for information on government policies.

The NRS further advised citizens to follow its official social media handles and website for accurate updates on tax matters and other activities.
