Nigerians hail Tinubu’s pardon as step toward healin
Some Nigerians have said the recent pardon extended to Gen. Mamman Vatsa, Herbert Macaulay and others would help heal historical wounds.
They told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Ibadan that President Tinubu had acted rightly in the interest of national reconciliation.
Mr Mashood Erubami, President of the Nigeria Voters Assembly, said the pardon granted to Vatsa, Herbert Macaulay and others rewrote past wrongs and promoted fairness and justice.
He said the move was timely, especially as those behind the injustices were still alive, adding that justice could always be reaffirmed under righteous leadership.
Erubami commended President Tinubu for extending the gesture to the Ogoni Nine, describing it as a symbol of renewed hope and a foundation for a just nation.
Alh. Wasiu Sadare, the Oyo State APC Publicity Secretary, said Tinubu and the Council of State acted wisely in granting the pardon to Vatsa, Macaulay and other deserving Nigerians.
Sadare said the decision reflected patriotism and foresight, stressing that it would heal historical wounds and promote peace, forgiveness and reconciliation among citizens.
He added that the pardon demonstrated Tinubu’s commitment to justice, equity and unity, which would further strengthen confidence in the government’s reconciliatory agenda.
Dr Gbemiga Bamidele, Convener of the Society for Journalism Enhancement Initiative (S4JEI), said the pardon carried strong moral and symbolic value for Nigeria’s democratic growth.
He explained that if managed transparently, the gesture could rebuild citizens’ trust in governance and promote truth-telling, reconciliation and collective national healing.
Bamidele, however, warned that if viewed as a political stunt, the pardon could deepen cynicism and undermine the moral essence of the government’s reconciliatory effort
