Irish authorities have arrested a 39 year old Nigerian businessman, Edwin Omokhuale, in connection with an alleged €19m fraud involving an Australian mining company.
Omokhuale was arrested by officers of An Garda Síochána on Thursday at Dublin Airport while he was preparing to board a flight to Paris.
According to reports by Ireland’s national broadcaster, RTÉ, the businessman had been declared wanted by the United Kingdom’s National Crime Agency over an alleged multimillion pound fraud.
Authorities said the arrest was carried out on the basis of a UK warrant. Omokhuale is expected to face money laundering charges linked to an alleged fraud against the Australian mining company in early 2023.
The amount involved has been put at approximately $23m, equivalent to about €19m.Reports indicate that Omokhuale was living in the United Kingdom at the time the alleged fraud occurred.
Following his arrest in Dublin, he is expected to appear before a court in Ireland as extradition proceedings commence to facilitate his return to the UK.
The case highlights the increasing level of international cooperation among law enforcement agencies in investigating alleged financial crimes that cross national borders.
However, the allegations against Omokhuale remain subject to legal proceedings, and the commencement of extradition proceedings does not in itself constitute a conviction.
