As Nigeria commemorate its 60th independence anniversary, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) has given a grim remark about the state of the nation.

Most Rev. Augustine O. Akubeze, Archbishop of Benin City and President of the CBCN, quipped that the country is on the verge of total collapse, lamenting that the growth of unemployment and other poor economic conditions.

According to Vanguard, Akubeze said there seems to be no clear plan to fix the economy as well as help the private sector to grow so that many of the youths can be employed.

The cleric also lamented that the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) have failed to deliver to Nigerians its campaign promises, particularly on restructuring.

“Nigerians from almost all geographical regions seem to agree that we need to start working on restructuring. The present political party leading Nigeria (APC) campaigned to attend to the issue of restructuring, sharing of resources, and a constitutional amendment if Nigerians voted them into power,” said the Catholic Bishop.

“It is somewhat regrettable that the Federal Government of Nigeria has not kept to its electoral promises. State Governors, Senators, Federal House of Representative Members must all work towards ensuring restructuring of Nigeria. Nigeria is almost at the verge of total collapse.”

MERIDIAN SPY reported Thursday, Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, observed that President Muhammadu Buhari has made the celebration of Nigeria’s rich diversity difficult.
