The Centre for Media, Policy, and Accountability, CMPA, has commended the recent landmark ruling by the Supreme Court, reinforcing the autonomy of local government councils.

This decision, delivered by a seven-member panel led by Justice Emmanuel Agim, marks a significant advancement for democracy and governance in Nigeria, the Centre in a release obtained by Politics Digest noted.

Dr. Suleiman Suleiman, Executive Director of CMPA, who signed the statement, observed that, “This judgment aligns with the core principles of federalism by delineating the separation of powers among the federal, state, and local governments.

“By upholding the autonomy of local governments, the Supreme Court has taken a decisive step towards strengthening grassroots democracy and enhancing local governance.

“This ruling is a victory for democratic governance and the rule of law. It empowers local governments to independently manage their resources and fulfill their mandate to deliver essential services to the communities they serve.

“We applaud the Supreme Court for its progressive interpretation of the law and its commitment to upholding constitutional provisions.”

“The Centre acknowledges the Federal Government’s role, through the Attorney General of the Federation, in initiating this crucial lawsuit. The court’s decision to grant full autonomy and direct funding to local governments underscores the importance of financial independence at the grassroots level.

“This move is expected to enhance accountability, transparency, and efficiency in local administration”.

Dr. Suleiman, while maintaining that local government autonomy is essential for true federalism and sustainable development, said: “It is imperative that all stakeholders, including state governments and local councils, work collaboratively to implement this ruling effectively.

“The Centre for Media, Policy, and Accountability remains committed to supporting initiatives that promote good governance and democratic principles.
As Nigeria progresses towards greater decentralization, it is crucial to ensure that local government elections are conducted fairly and transparently.

“The Centre for Media, Policy and Accountability calls for an amendment of the existing constitution to empower the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) oversee local government elections, ensuring free, fair, and democratic processes nationwide. As this will help mitigate issues of voter apathy and ensure that local leaders are truly representative of their communities.

“The Centre for Media, Policy, and Accountability looks forward to the positive impacts of this ruling on local governance and the overall democratic process in Nigeria”.
