Jonathan Risks Disqualification Over Constitutional Term Limit – Presidenc
The Presidency has warned that while former President Goodluck Jonathan is free to contest the 2027 presidential election if he wishes, his eligibility will ultimately be tested in court, given that he has already been sworn in twice.
In a statement on Monday, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said Jonathan would “have his date in the court of the land” to determine whether his candidacy aligns with constitutional provisions, which prohibit a third term in office.
Onanuga was reacting to remarks by former Minister of Information, Prof. Jerry Gana, who suggested that Jonathan could be drafted into the 2027 race under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). According to the Presidency, such moves are “self-serving” and designed to use Jonathan for personal and ethnic interests.
While welcoming Jonathan to test his chances if he chooses, Onanuga stressed that Nigerians would also have to weigh his record in office, which he described as dismal and economically ruinous.
“The jury will determine whether Jonathan, who was sworn in twice as president, satisfies the constitutional requirements and is eligible to contest the presidency and be sworn in, if successful, for a third term,” the statement read in part.
The Presidency further contrasted Jonathan’s tenure with President Bola Tinubu’s, claiming that Tinubu has reversed the economic decline of previous years through bold reforms that restored investor confidence, stabilised the naira, and grew the GDP.
Onanuga maintained that Nigerians would not “easily forget the recent past” and would resist any attempt to return to what he described as failed leadership.
