Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai says he bears no hatred or resentment towards former colleagues, friends and family members who have chosen not to stand by him amid his current circumstances.
El-Rufai stated this in a statement titled “My Relationships and the Aftermath,” published on his X handle, where he reflected on the reactions of people he had supported over the years.
The former governor said his support for individuals and causes was guided by his Islamic faith, Arewa upbringing, personal values and conscience, rather than an expectation of gratitude, praise or reciprocity. He acknowledged that some of those he previously supported may choose to speak for him, remain silent, distance themselves from him or even deny previous relationships.
According to him, those choices belong to the individuals concerned, and he does not wish to judge them simply because their response differs from what he or others might have expected.
El-Rufai said his recent experiences had, however, given him an opportunity to reflect more deeply on some of his relationships, noting that “adversity has a way of illuminating relationships.” He said such reflection could make him reconsider the nature of certain relationships and what people who look up to him expect from those relationships.
He stressed that this should not be interpreted as condemnation or reproach, but rather as an opportunity to see people and life more clearly.
The former governor also said he had no regrets about standing by people or causes whenever he believed doing so was right.
“I bear no resentment towards anyone who chooses not to do the same for me,” he said.
On perceived injustice, ingratitude or injury against him, El-Rufai said he would not seek revenge or retribution. He said he would leave ultimate accountability to Almighty Allah, both in this world and the Hereafter.
He concluded by saying that his priority was to remain at peace with his conscience and with Almighty Allah, adding that everyone must ultimately live with the choices they make, while posterity would render its own judgment.
El-Rufai’s statement comes amid his ongoing legal difficulties and detention by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission over allegations he has denied. He has previously accused the administration of political persecution, while the government and relevant authorities have disputed the allegation.
