The Oba of Benin, His Majesty Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo Ewuare II, has called for continuity in governance, urging Nigerians not to seek political change merely for the sake of change.
The monarch spoke on Tuesday when the Director-General of the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council, Senator Abdulaziz Yari, led members of the council to the Benin Palace to seek royal blessings and support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid.
Oba Ewuare II stressed that the Benin traditional institution remained non-partisan, saying his call for continuity should not be interpreted as an endorsement of any political party.
The monarch also urged opposition parties to play their constitutional role while working with the government in the interest of the country.
“In democracy there must be opposition when a party comes to power. I don’t see why an opposition party can’t support the ruling party,” the Oba said.
Yari, during the visit, highlighted what he described as economic improvements under the Tinubu administration, including changes in GDP growth, inflation and foreign exchange stability.
