At least 62 lives were lost in Lagos State due to fire outbreaks and building collapses between January and June 2025, according to the mid-year report released by the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service.

The report, signed by the Director of the agency, Margaret Adeseye, revealed that the Service attended to a total of 1,072 emergency calls during the six-month period. These included 922 fire incidents, 10 building collapses (eight of them partial), two minor explosions, 73 rescue operations, and 65 salvage operations.

A total of 252 victims were rescued from various incidents, while 62 deaths were recorded. The agency also disclosed that property estimated at ₦64.32 billion was salvaged during the period, while losses amounted to ₦10.72 billion.

The Director attributed the response efficiency to improved stakeholder collaboration and preventive awareness across the state. She also announced that preparations were in top gear for the second edition of the International Fire Safety Conference, scheduled to hold later this year.

Adeseye, however, expressed concern over the high number of prank emergency calls, which stood at 315 within the reporting period, noting that such false alarms continue to obstruct timely responses to genuine emergencies.
