The Federal Government has warned contractors handling the Lokoja–Ayingba and Okene–Itobe road projects in Kogi State that their contracts risk termination following poor performance despite huge financial mobilization.
Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, who issued the warning during an inspection tour, expressed dismay that after the release of over ₦2.5 billion, only about one percent of work has been executed on the Lokoja–Ayingba axis.
He described the situation as unacceptable and a betrayal of public trust, insisting that government will not tolerate delay or abandonment of critical projects.
Umahi announced that a comprehensive review of the contracts has been ordered, with clear milestones to be set for delivery.
He gave the contractors 30 days to show visible progress or face mutual termination. According to him, the Ministry is determined to ensure that every naira released delivers tangible results for Nigerians.
The Minister, who was accompanied by top officials of the Works Ministry, reiterated that the President Bola Tinubu administration is committed to completing ongoing infrastructure projects across the country.
He stressed that road construction remains central to the government’s Renewed Hope Agenda, particularly in opening up economic corridors, boosting commerce, and improving security in states like Kogi.
Umahi assured road users that the Ministry will take decisive action to guarantee timely delivery, warning that the era of collecting funds without work is over.
He reaffirmed that government will only partner with contractors who demonstrate competence, capacity, and accountability.
