FG to Prioritise Non-Oil Export Expansion in 2026 — Oduwole

The Federal Government will prioritise the expansion of non-oil exports in 2026 as part of efforts to deepen economic diversification, the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr Jumoke Oduwole, has said.

Oduwole made this known on Wednesday at the National Assembly Complex, Abuja, during the appraisal of the ministry’s 2025 budget and the defence of its 2026 budget proposal.

The minister, who was accompanied by senior officials of the ministry, described 2025 as a year of significant gains in trade and investment, noting that the focus in 2026 would be on consolidating those achievements, particularly in investment mobilisation and export promotion.

Speaking with journalists after appearing before the Joint House of Representatives Committee on Trade, Industry and Small and Medium Scale Enterprises, Oduwole said the ministry would embark on a nationwide tour across the six geo-political zones to promote trade facilitation.

She said, “This idea is to push the renewed hope agenda number seven, which is diversification of non-oil exports. Nigeria’s exports have already increased by 14 per cent compared to the rest of Africa, and this is one of the highest we’ve ever achieved.

“Non-oil exports were the highest last year, gaining over $6bn in terms of both volume and value. We’ve never had it so good. Export is the way to go. We have our agricultural products. All we have to do is package them and push them to the rest of the world.”

On local investment, the minister outlined plans to strengthen domestic participation while attracting foreign capital.

She said, “The Nigeria first agenda is to support domestic investors, making sure that we also bring foreign investors into Nigeria. The ministry will be going around to all six geopolitical zones to galvanise efforts on trade facilitation. We will be working with state governors and local government areas as well.”

Providing an update on capital inflows, Oduwole said Nigeria “recorded total capital importation of approximately $21bn in the first ten months of 2025, up from about $12bn in 2024 and under $4bn in 2023. This recovery was supported by the ministry’s actions, including the curation of over $5bn in bankable projects, sector-specific deal rooms, and Nigeria’s inaugural Domestic Investors’ Summit.

“On industrial development and diversification, special economic zones generated over $500m in export revenues and created more than 20,000 direct jobs. We also secured the approval of the Federal Executive Council for the National Industrial Policy in November 2025.

“These activities helped re-engage domestic capital and facilitated the resolution of about 50 investor bottlenecks, driving projects from intention to implementation.”

On trade performance, the minister said Nigeria “recorded a trade surplus in 2025, with total trade valued at approximately N113tn in the first three quarters of the year.”

Turning to the 2026 budget, Oduwole said the ministry would focus on programmes aimed at stimulating economic growth and strengthening industrial capacity.

“We are poised to strengthen Nigeria’s productive base, as we connect global and regional demand and capital with domestic supply capacity, in support of national development priorities.

“In 2026, the ministry will focus on implementation, advancing industrial policy through targeted value chain and industrial cluster development and special economic zones.”

She disclosed that the ministry’s proposed capital allocation for 2026 stands at N2.72bn.

Earlier, the Chairman of the House Committee on Commerce, Ahmed Munir, said the National Assembly would intensify its oversight functions in the 2026 fiscal year.

“In the 2026 cycle, our oversight will not be business as usual. We are looking beyond ‘budget performance’ in terms of mere fund exhaustion; we are looking for value-for-money and tangible impact.

“Our priorities for this session are anchored on the pillars of domestic production, SMEs empowerment, and trade expansion,” he said.

  • Jilli Airstrike: Supporters Of Terrorists Will Be Treated As Bandits, Defence Minister Warns Defence Minister Christopher Musa has warned that supporters of terrorists would be treated as criminals. He said this on Monday as he reacted to the airstrike carried out by the Nigerian Air Force airstrike in Jilli, Borno State, over the weekend. Speaking after an expanded security meeting in Kaduna with the state governor and heads of security agencies, Musa said the operation sends a clear message to those collaborating with terrorist groups. He stressed that anyone found supporting insurgents would face the same consequences as the perpetrators. “A friend of a thief is a thief,” he said, warning civilians against associating with or providing any form of assistance to terrorists. Musa urged residents to steer clear of areas known to be used by insurgents, noting that proximity or collaboration could have grave consequences. The airstrike, carried out near the village of Jilli in Gubio Local Government Area, targeted what the military described as an ISWAP enclave and logistics hub. According to the Nigerian Air Force, the operation was intelligence-driven and aimed at neutralising terror elements and destroying their equipment. However, reports have emerged alleging that the strike may have affected a weekly market in the area, with civilians, including cross-border traders, reportedly among casualties. Musa, however, maintained that the strike should serve as a strong warning to those aiding insurgent activities, reaffirming the military’s resolve to intensify operations against terrorist networks. Air Component of Joint Task Force (North East) Operation HADIN KAI, conducted a precision air strike on a known terrorist enclave and logistics hub located near the abandoned village of Jilli in Gubio Local Government Area of Borno State. Giving an update on the airstrike, the Nigerian Army in a post on its official X handle said, “The successful strike, executed on 11 April 2026, followed sustained intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance missions over the Bindul–Jilli axis, an area long identified as a major terrorist movement corridor and convergence point for Islamic State West Africa Province terrorists and their collaborators.”
