The Department of State Services (DSS) on Tuesday arraigned human rights activist and publisher, Omoyele Sowore, before the Federal High Court in Abuja over an alleged offensive post on social media directed at President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

According to court filings, Sowore is facing a five-count charge bordering on the publication of statements deemed false and capable of inciting public disorder.

The charge, dated September 16, 2025, was filed by the Federal Government through the Director of Public Prosecutions, M.B. Abubakar, alongside four lawyers representing the DSS.

The prosecution alleged that on August 25, Sowore used his official handle on X (formerly Twitter) to describe President Tinubu in derogatory terms, an act said to contravene Section 24(2)(b) of the Cybercrimes Prohibition and Prevention Act, 2024.

Court documents also listed X Inc. and Meta Platforms Inc. as co-defendants, over claims that they hosted the alleged offensive content. The Federal Government further accused Sowore of refusing to delete the post after a formal request was conveyed to the platform by the DSS.

Sowore, who was sighted at the court premises on Tuesday ahead of his arraignment, dismissed the charges as politically motivated. In a statement issued last week, he confirmed the filing of the case and vowed to defend himself.

“The State Security Service today filed a five-count charge at the Federal High Court in Abuja against ‘X,’ Facebook, and myself. They claimed that because I called Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu a criminal, I have somehow committed offences across five counts. Regardless, I will be present whenever this case is assigned for trial,” Sowore stated.

The activist also reiterated his refusal to retract or delete the post. “One option I will not be taking is deleting that tweet,” he added.

The case is expected to come up for formal hearing on a date to be fixed by the court
