Former vice president, Atiku Abubakar has extended his congratulations to Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki for joining the main opposition party, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in his bid to secure the party’s ticket to contest the state governorship election.

MERIDIAN SPY reported earlier Obaseki officially defected to the PDP at the state Secretariat of the party in Benin city, Edo State.

“The governor of Edo State, H. E. @GovernorObaseki has defected to our great Party, the @OfficialPDPNig. The declaration was made this afternoon at the state Secretariat of our party in Benin city, Edo State. Power to the people. #EdoIsPDP,” the PDP noted on Twitter on Friday.

Shorty after, the governor also confirmed he had joined the party, stating “i have officially joined the @OfficialPDPNig to advance my ambition to seek re-election as Governor of Edo State.

“I, as always, remain committed to engendering good governance and sustainable development of our dear state.”

Reacting on Friday, Atiku retweeted Obaseki’s post with a congratulatory message, noting that he is confident the people of Edo State “will be the better for it”.

“Congratulations, @GovernorObaseki on joining our party, @OfficialPDPNig—the truly people’s party. I am confident that the people of Edo State will be the better for it. You are indeed coming aboard a repositioned PDP that promotes good governance for the benefit of Nigerians. -AA,” the 2019 PDP presidential candidate wrote.

The APC had considered the governor ineligible to contest the party’s primary election over defections in his High School and National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) certificates.

Obaseki however vowed no to appeal the decision but said he would declare his next move after meeting his supporters and the President Muhammadu Buhari.

Days after the meeting the president’s Chief of Staff, Ibrahim Gambari, he resigned from the party.

His deputy, Philip Shaibu also followed suit by announcing his resignation from the APC and declaring that wherever the governor goes he would follow.
