Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has disclosed that his administration has constructed 414 roads across the state within three years, spanning over 860 kilometres.
He also revealed that the state’s debt profile has been reduced by about 60 per cent over the same period, describing the progress as part of ongoing fiscal reforms and infrastructure renewal efforts.
Otti made the disclosure during his monthly media briefing, “Governor Alex Otti Speaks to Abians,” held in Umuahia on Friday night.
According to him, the road projects include street lighting and drainage systems, with 82 additional roads currently under construction at various stages of completion. He added that many of these projects are expected to be commissioned soon.
The governor stated that Abia’s debt stock had dropped from about ₦191 billion in 2023 to below ₦50 billion by the end of 2025, attributing the improvement to stronger financial management and accountability measures.
He also noted that the state has improved significantly in independent fiscal rankings, moving from 17th position in 2023 to 4th in 2025 in assessments of transparency and budget performance.
Otti further said his administration had intensified reforms in land administration, including the signing of 4,707 Certificates of Occupancy—reportedly more than the total issued between 1999 and 2023. He also announced the digitisation of land records, with about four million documents already scanned.
In environmental sanitation, he disclosed that over 2,000 jobs had been created through the Abia State Environmental Agency, while the state currently evacuates about 13 tonnes of waste weekly.
On transportation, the governor highlighted the introduction of electric buses and ongoing construction of charging infrastructure in Umuahia and Aba, with additional buses expected in the coming months.
In the education and health sectors, Otti said his administration had built smart schools, recruited teachers, and strengthened tertiary institutions. He added that over 821 health workers were employed, with hundreds already deployed across facilities.
He also disclosed that more than 93,000 residents have enrolled in the state health insurance scheme, while 277 primary healthcare centres have been renovated, with many already operational.
Ongoing upgrades are also being carried out in several general hospitals and tertiary health institutions across the state.
Otti reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to infrastructure development, fiscal discipline, and social welfare, stating that the focus remains on restoring dignity and improving the quality of life of citizens.
