Manchester United marked their return to the UEFA Champions League in emphatic fashion on Thursday, cruising to a 4 0 victory over Azerbaijani champions Sabah at Old Trafford.

The victory gave Michael Carrick’s side the perfect start to their Champions League campaign, with United making their return to Europe’s elite competition after a three season absence. The match was also United’s 300th European Cup appearance.

United took control of the encounter in the 27th minute when Matheus Cunha converted Patrick Dorgu’s cross to open the scoring.

Sabah had a golden opportunity to respond shortly afterwards, but Joy Lance Mickels failed to convert a close range chance that could have brought the visitors level.

Manchester United punished the miss six minutes later. Bruno Fernandes doubled United’s advantage in the 42nd minute after combining with Youri Tielemans before finding the back of the net.

Benjamin Sesko then added a third just before half time, calmly finishing after being played through by Bryan Mbeumo.

With United three goals ahead at the interval, Carrick was able to rotate his squad with Sunday’s Manchester derby against Manchester City in mind.

Martínez Completes United’s Rout

United continued to control the match after the break and eventually added a fourth in the 68th minute.

Lisandro Martínez finished from close range after Joshua Zirkzee’s clever backheel created confusion inside the Sabah penalty area.

The goal completed a comfortable evening for the hosts, who also kept a clean sheet and gave several players valuable minutes ahead of a demanding domestic fixture.

Carrick praised his players after the match, highlighting both their attacking quality and defensive discipline.

“It’s nice to have a clean sheet,” the United manager said, while noting the quality of the football his side produced during the victory.

Sabah’s Historic Champions League Debut

Despite the heavy defeat, Sabah’s appearance at Old Trafford represented a significant milestone for the Azerbaijani club.

The club, founded only in 2017, had never previously reached the Champions League proper before this season. Sabah progressed through four qualifying rounds to secure their place in the league phase.

The defeat also came against a Manchester United side with vastly greater European experience. United were appearing in the Champions League for the 26th time, an English record.

For Carrick and his players, however, attention now turns quickly to Sunday’s Manchester derby, with the comfortable European victory providing a timely boost in confidence.

United’s next Champions League assignment will come away to Atlético Madrid, but their immediate focus will be on maintaining their momentum against Manchester City.
