The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed that it is investigating 30 cases of alleged politically motivated killings linked to the build-up to the August 15 governorship election in Osun State.
Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Anietie Iniedu, disclosed this during an appearance on Channels Television’s Morning Brief, stating that several suspects have already been arrested in connection with the incidents. He added that some of the suspects have been arraigned in court, while investigations into other cases are ongoing.
Iniedu declined to provide further details on the identities of the suspects or specifics of the investigations, explaining that doing so could jeopardise ongoing judicial proceedings. He, however, assured Nigerians that the police remain committed to ensuring justice and maintaining law and order in the state.
The confirmation comes amid heightened political tension ahead of the Osun governorship election, with concerns over recurring incidents of violence and attacks in parts of the state. Security agencies have intensified efforts to curb the unrest and safeguard the electoral process.
