Nigeria’s Ambassador-designate to Mexico, Reno Omokri, has sparked reactions after claiming that Nigerians can survive on ₦3,000 daily.

Omokri made the statement while discussing the country’s economic realities and the rising cost of living.

He said he recently visited markets to assess the prices of basic food items, including yam, rice, maize and fruits, and concluded that ₦3,000 could sustain an average Nigerian for a day.

According to him, the purchasing power of money must be considered within the economic realities of individual countries, arguing that the same amount does not necessarily provide the same standard of living across different economies.

“I went there with one journalist, no security, and I stopped along the way, and I priced goods. I priced yam, I priced rice, I priced maize, I priced fruits. In Nigeria, people can live on that amount in a day,” Omokri said.

His comment comes amid widespread concerns over food prices, household income and the increasing cost of living, with many Nigerians continuing to grapple with rising expenses.

The statement has generated debate, with some questioning whether ₦3,000 is sufficient to meet the daily needs of an average Nigerian household.
