The National Population Commission (NPC) has announced that Nigeria’s estimated population is now at 206 million.

This means the estimated population increased by eight million in two years.

Recall the commission announced in 2018 the nation’s estimated population was 198 million.

At a press conference on Tuesday, Nasir Kwarra, Chairman of the commission, who announced the new figure, explained that NPC relied on its usual projections due to the absence of actual census yet to be conducted in the country.

“In the absence of an actual census, we formally do projections and we have all along been doing our projections and we estimate that as of 2020, the estimated population of Nigeria is 206 million,” said Kwarra.

“Planning for the census is anchored on the EAD as the basis for estimating both the human and material resources required for the census. In essence, the success of a credible and accurate census depends very much on the quality and reliability of the EAD.”

The NPC boss however, said only the President, Muhammadu Buhari had the right to declare the conduct of a new census, but was optimistic the President would do the needful.

President Buhari, in October, approved N10 billion for the conduct of a national census.

The last census conducted in Nigeria was in 2006.
