Nigeria has signed a contract with Thales Alenia Space for the development of a new telecommunications satellite, NigComSat-2A, aimed at strengthening digital connectivity across Nigeria and Africa.
The satellite will operate in geostationary orbit and provide services including television broadcasting, broadband internet, voice calls and other digital applications, particularly for underserved and remote communities. With a launch mass of nearly four tonnes, NigComSat-2A is expected to cover areas stretching from West and Central Africa to Southern Africa and have an operational life of more than 15 years.
NIGCOMSAT Managing Director and CEO, Nkechi Jane Egerton-Idehen, described the agreement as a significant step in Nigeria’s digital transformation, saying the project would strengthen the country’s satellite communications capacity while expanding access to reliable broadband and digital services.
The satellite will be built on Thales Alenia Space’s Spacebus B2 platform and is expected to provide additional capacity and resilience to Africa’s communications infrastructure as demand for connectivity continues to grow.
