The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has dissociated itself from the 59-member Presidential Campaign Council unveiled by the Obi-Kwankwaso Movement, popularly known as the OK Movement, ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The party said the campaign council did not emanate from its leadership and should be disregarded by the public and the media.

NDC National Chairman, Senator Cleopas Moses, stated this in a statement issued on Saturday, stressing that only the party’s leadership could constitute and announce a Presidential Campaign Council.

The clarification followed the unveiling of the 59-member council by the movement, which included zonal and state coordinators as well as directors responsible for mobilisation, women affairs, strategy, security, legal affairs and other areas.

According to Moses, no individual, candidate or support group was authorised to establish or publish any campaign structure in the name of the NDC without prior approval from the party’s National Working Committee.

He said the party recognised and appreciated the contributions of support groups but warned that such organisations should not operate as alternative or parallel structures of the party.

The NDC chairman also urged members and support groups with grievances to use the party’s internal mechanisms for resolution rather than resorting to public attacks.

The party further announced that John Ughulu, who was credited with announcing the campaign council, had been referred to its appropriate disciplinary organ over what it described as his alleged excesses during the Lagos State primary and repeated disregard for party authority.

The development comes days after the OK Movement unveiled the 59-member structure as part of efforts to mobilise support for the joint presidential ticket of Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso.

Ughulu, the movement’s Director-General, was named Director-General of the campaign council, while its National Secretary, Saadatu Sani, was listed as secretary.

However, the NDC maintained that the movement’s structure was not an official party campaign council and had not received the approval of its leadership.
