The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has taken delivery of five new helicopters as part of ongoing efforts by the Federal Government to strengthen the country’s airpower and enhance military operations.
The platforms comprise three AW-109 Trekker B helicopters manufactured by Leonardo Helicopters of Italy and two H-125 helicopters produced by Airbus Helicopters. The three AW-109 helicopters arrived in Lagos on September 15, while the H-125s were delivered earlier.
According to the NAF, the AW-109 Trekker Bs will enhance intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, close air support, armed escort and combat search-and-rescue operations, while the H-125s will provide versatile light-helicopter support.
The Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, said the new platforms would increase aircraft availability and improve the NAF’s ability to support ground troops across multiple operational theatres, including efforts to counter terrorism, kidnapping and banditry.
The newly delivered helicopters are undergoing post-delivery assembly, technical checks and crew-readiness processes ahead of their induction and operational deployment.
